What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It's typically caused by plaque—a sticky film of bacteria—that builds up on the teeth and hardens.

In advanced stages, periodontal disease can lead to periodontitis. It affects as many as 50% of Americans over the age of 30. And is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Bad breath that won’t go away

  • Red or swollen gums

  • Tender or bleeding gums

  • Painful chewing

  • Loose teeth

  • Sensitive teeth

  • Receding gums or longer appearing teeth

If you have missing or extremely loose teeth because of periodontal disease, dental implants could help restore your smile and your oral health.
